In other systems, a fair amount of wiring is required between the controller and the I/O devices, as well as a control board packed with wires. Switching to a network lets you bundle lines together between the controller and the distributor connected to the I/O or servo drive.
Reducing the work required to check all those wires shaves off considerable labor as well.
